So, somewhere on the interwebs are a few prior blog posts by me, but I’m making a clean break and trying to start fresh – in a lot of ways. So, this will be the beginning of what I hope will be a growing body of writing for me and a habit, beyond the reams of text I have to turn out on a daily basis for work and in my own personal correspondence, that will serve as a collecting point for various thoughts, ideas, and perhaps even generate some discussion as it grows.
This will be post #1, then. And will become the “About Me” once I figure out how to manipulate the settings and format of this blog.
So, who is Dale Saran? Good question. Currently, I’m a 41 year-old attorney (RI and MA), recently moved from Scottsdale, AZ, to Wakefield, RI. A homecoming of sorts for me, as I grew up in RI, though not in Wakefield. I’m currently the General Counsel for CrossFit, Inc., and also a Major in the Marine Corps Reserves. In that capacity, I serve as the Reserve Regional Defense Counsel for the Western Pacific (Hawaii, Okinawa, and mainland Japan). I also continue to take an occasional case through my relationship as Of Counsel to the National Military Justice Group, with the gracious understanding of the CEO of CrossFit. I was once a Cobra Pilot in the Marine Corps in my younger days, but it’s been 15 years since I flew a “Whiskey”, so that is a distant, but fond, memory.
There’s the resume, in short. Maine Law alum, Boston University undergrad, and Westerly High School (my 3rd and final high school – the one where I happened to be for Senior Year – ’87).
The personal. Well, I was married for 15 years, raised a step-daughter and three more girls after that, divorced by the 17 year mark, and now am the non-custodial parent for 4 wonderful daughters, who are all at or nearing the age of majority. Yep, we started young.
Philosophically, I suppose I have to cop to being “conservative” but I hate that term because it has so many unwanted connotations right now. I’m not a republican, nor a democrat, and libertarian/independent would probably most closely describe me politically – although I like to use the term “principled” when people ask about my politics at parties (if it comes up). I’m passionate about what I do, whether it’s CrossFit for fitness/lifestyle, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for martial arts, representing my clients, or teaching the occasional trial advocacy course for the military or elsewhere.
I tend to wear my heart right there where the sleeve would be if I wasn’t in a tee-shirt and have been described generously as “a little intense.” Notwithstanding, I feel little stress on a day-to-day basis. I work hard, play hard, and laugh loudly; argue vehemently, but am not dogmatic and will reconsider both my thoughts, words, and actions after there’s been some time to really digest what I said and what’s been said to me.
This blog will serve as nothing more than a collection point for those matters that hit me and generate enough cogitation that I feel I can post about it. It should run the gamut from relationship advice to thoughts on tort reform to weightlifting techniques to whether the Sox should continue to start Wakefield and let him break Cy Young’s and Roger Clemens records for wins as a Red Sox starter. And, should the Bruins complete their comeback over the Canucks, it will be the primary celebrating ground for the first Cup since I was 3.
So, file this under Post #1 and “Who am I…”
